A Patron of Reading is a school’s special children's author, poet, storyteller or illustrator. The school and their patron develop a relationship over a period of time. Everything the patron does is related to helping encourage and develop a reading for pleasure culture in the school: blogs, book recommendations, discussions, book quizzes, parent sessions, book trails and school visits. The possibilities are virtually endless.
I am the Patron of Reading for Brereton CE Primary School in Cheshire and I love going into school regularly to read to each class. I also support a holiday book review challenge, providing recommendations and video blogs as well as providing prizes for children who take part.
World Book Day is also an excellent event around which to create lots of fun reading activities and events. This year, Brereton will be having a dress-up day, book trail around the village, author visit, mystery readers, a library presentation and much more.
